Similar to what we did in our article on the deity of Christ and the Qur'an, here we present a chart which shows how the attributes ascribed to YHWH in the Old Testament are also given to the Lord Jesus in the New Testament Scriptures.
YHWH: “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you." (Exodus 31:13) "Then the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.” (Ezekiel 37:28) | Jesus: "And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." (Hebrews 10:10) "And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption," (1 Corinthians 1:30) |
YHWH: “You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you." (Nehemiah 9:6) | Jesus: "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him." (Colossians 1:16) "but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world." (Hebrews 1:2) |
YHWH: "And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem." (Isaiah 8:14) | Jesus: "As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious," (1 Peter 2:4) |
YHWH: "Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul." (Psalm 66:16) | Jesus: "“Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him." (Luke 8:39) |
YHWH: "You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men, even among the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there." (Psalm 66:18) | Jesus: "But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)" (Ephesians 4:7-10) |
YHWH: "Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens." (Psalm 119:89) | Jesus: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." (Mark 13:31) |
YHWH: "“You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me." (Isaiah 43:10) | Jesus: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) |
YHWH: "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD." (Jeremiah 17:7) | Jesus: “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me." (John 14:1) |
YHWH: "For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6) | Jesus: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8) |
YHWH: "Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young." (Isaiah 40:10-11) | Jesus: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11) |
YHWH: "And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities." (Psalm 130:8) | Jesus: "She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21) |
